Lyceum Theatre

Project – Repairs and decorations to the façade of grade II* listed theatre
Value – £220,000
Duration – 10 months
Complete – October 2024

The Lyceum Theatre’s history dates back to when it first opened in 1765. For over 200 years, there has been a theatre in London’s Covent Garden called the Lyceum, but not as we know it today. It’s taken many different forms throughout the years but has, and continues to be, one of the UK’s most prominent and important theatres.

In December 2023, ARK23 was selected to appoint the design team and put together a tender for repair and decoration works for the façade. This required listed building consent and various permits to erect scaffolding. Our work commenced on 15th July 2024 and completed on 20th September. The scope of works include:
• Specialist cleaning to the stonework
• Repairs to cracks and decorative scrolls
• Repointing of joints
• Repairs and re-decoration of all masonry
• Repairs and decorations to the windows
• Specialist coating to the stonework
• Installation of steel beam to support terrazzo step
• Repairs to terrazzo step
• Removal and replacement of lead capping
• Repairs to the canopy on Vauxhall Bridge Road

The musical version of the Lion King has been performed at the Lyceum since 1999 with these works completed in time for the 25th anniversary performance.
